Melton and Abbey McNaughton of Susman Godfrey, secured a $32.5 million patent
infringement verdict against STMicroelectronics, Inc. and STMicroelectronics
International, NV on behalf of The Trustees of Purdue University. The infringed
patent claims a design for double-implanted silicon carbide MOSFETs. The $32.5
million damages award covers the period from 2016 to 2022, and applies a
royalty rate of 3.5%. Based on data revealed in the public closing arguments,
Purdue estimates ST likely will owe up to $100 million in future royalties
applying the 3.5% royalty rate to ST's future sales over the remaining life of
the patent.
